Jimmy Carter, the former president of the USA and member of the group of elders published a book called Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid. This brought into the mainstream something that was known to people close to Palestine and Israel for a while.

Palestinians are living as second class citizens in the historic land of Palestine under an apartheid regime.

Although apartheid is often identified with the old South African regime, the crime of apartheid has a broader legal definition by the International Criminal Court. Namely inhumane acts of a character similar to other crimes against humanity "committed in the context of an institutionalized regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group over any other racial group or groups and committed with the intention of maintaining that regime".

Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu have both been very direct in calling Israeli treatment of Palestinians apartheid. And they should know.

Most recently, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, along with parts of the United Nations and B'Tselem, the largest human rights organistion inside Israel, have all drawn the same conclusion. That Israel is operating a system of apartheid.
